Day 1 Ulaanbaator

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, City tour including the Natural History Museum, with its famous dinosaur skeletons. Overnight in the hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

 

Day 2 Dalanzadgag, South Gobi

Drive to airport, Flight to Dalanzadgad, centre of South Gobi province. On the way from local airport to Dalanzadgad visit the nearby wetland and farm to check migrant and local birds. Drive to the tourist ger camp. After dinner, presentation about birds and natural environment of Gobi desert. Overnight in gers, mongolian traditional dwelling.

Day 3 Yolin in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains

animals such as ibex or argali wild sheep is higher in the early morning. The name “Yolyn am” means Lammergeier’s
valley. The valley is the habitation area of these rare birds. Lammergeier is one of the big raptors of Mongolia and is listed in the Mongolia Red Book as endangered. At Yolyn am there is a chance to see a lot of bird species. Most important species are big raptors such as Lammergeier – Gypaetus barbatus, Black vulture – Aegypius monachus, Griffon vulture – Gyps fulvus, Golden eagle – Aquila chrysaetos. Because of their big and heavy bodies, they must wait till the air is warm enough to fly. In the summer you can see them fly in the group at 8 or 9 a.m. and in the autumn at 9 or 10 a.m. at Bust ulaan gorge of Yolyn am. Another interesting species of this area are Wall creeper – Tichodroma muraria, Rock Thrush – Monticola saxatilis and also Altai Snowcock – Tetraogallus altaicus, but the habitation area of Snowcock is in the high mountains and it is difficult to see them.After 8 km walk, we’ll cross the Zuun Saikhan mountain. On the way, the chance to see wild animals and bird species is quit high. After the lunch we’ll visit the valley of Mukhar shivert.The valley of Mukhar Shivert is one of the beautiful valleys of Zuun Saikhan mountains and last 5 years 2 Lammergeier families were observed here. There is a possibility to make 2 km walk. On the way back to the camp we’ll pass through Khavtsgait valley. In the evening, presentation about Mongolian paleontology. Overnight in tents

Day 4 Birds in a steppe, mountains and lakes

Today we’ll observe the steppe and mountain birds. We’ll also visit surroundings
of some mountain dews to see the local birds. The most importants species are Oriental Plover – Charadrius veredus, Small Snowfinch – Pyrgilauda davidiana.After crossing the Ulin davaa pass, we’ll arrive at Tukhumiin Tsagaan lake and have lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive to our next tourist ger camp. Among of large population of local birds interesting bird species of this area are Saxaul Sparrow – Passer ammodendri, Mongolian Ground Jay – Podoces hendersoni.
We can observe Saxaul Sparrow at Adag nuur lake of Khongoriin els sand dunes and around of Tourism information ger and last 5 years 50-60 birds are living constantly at the Adag nuur lake. And around Tourism information ger one family of Saxaul Sparrow was observed during last 3 years.
Mongolian Ground Jay is difficult to see in the summer and is listed in the Mongolian Red Book as endangered. However the chance to see them exists in the almond bushes of Ereen chuluut mountain, on the other side of Khongorin els sand dunes. And in the winter this bird was observed many times close to nomadic families.

Day 5 Sand dunes day

Excursion to sand dunes. Visit a camel breeding family. Possibility to ride a camel. Overnight in tents

Day 6 Erdenebulag Dew and local birds species

Early morning we’ll drive to Erdenebulag dew that was restaured after deportation of all nomadic families from this area. Here we can see some local bird species. After we’ll observe some small bird species and also some raptors at Gegeetiin hundii valley. This area was habited by large population of Chukar – Alectoris chukar, but during the hard winter of 2009 the population is nearby disappeared. But last years the population is increasing again. Drive back to the camp, overnight

Day 7 Terelj national Park

Drive to Dalanzadgad, flight back to Ulaanbaatar. From the airport we’ll drive to the Terelj National Park in the Khentii mountain area. Bird watching. Overnight in Gers.

Day 8 Rock mountain area with 253 bird species.

Birdwatching in the rock mountain area. Overnight in Gers. (Arboreal species dominate with 83 species. Bold (1984) indicate 253 bird species for the Khentii (61 resident species, 119 nesting migrants, 16 wintering birds, 36 passage migrants, 12 vagrants and 9 unconfirmed nesting species). The 180 species of nesting birds comprise Siberian, Chinese, Mongolian, Arctic, Mediterranean and Tibetan species).

Day 9

After breakfast, drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Free time, evening performance. Overnight in hotel in Ulaanbaator.

 

Day 10 Departure from Ulaanbaator

Transfer to the airport or train station. Departure
