Russia is a country in northern Eurasia. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland,Estonia,Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both via Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea.
Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth’s inhabited land area.

There are over 160 different ethnic groups and indigenous peoples in Russia.Including ethnic Russians with their Slavic Orthodox traditions, Tatars and Bashkirs with their Turkic Muslim culture, Buddhist nomadic Buryats and Kalmyks, Shamanistic peoples of the Extreme North.

Handicraft, like Dymkovo toy, khokhloma, gzhel and palekh miniature represent an important aspect of Russian folk culture.

Russian cuisine widely uses fish, poultry, mushrooms, berries, and honey. Black bread is rather popular in Russia, compared to the rest of the world.

Flavourful soups and stews are often eaten including shchi, borsch, ukha, solyanka and okroshka. Chicken Kiev, pelmeni and shashlyk are popular meat dishes, the last two being of Tatar and Caucasus origin respectively.

Russians have many traditions, including the washing in banya, a hot steam bath similar to a sauna.
When to travel:

Summer:
July and August are make up the main tourist season. St. Petersburg has endless daylight during the early part of July when the sun never fully sets. This is called “White Nights”.

Spring and Autumn
May, June, September and October are good times to visit Russia and to avoid crowds. Moscow and St. Petersburg have festivals and concerts in May and June to welcome in the spring and summer.

Winter
In the early winter, much of Russia sees a lot of snow to experience a ride in a troika (a horse-drawn sledge), this is a great time of year. This is the low season so you can get bargains and maybe better service.
Better to avoid travel in March – beginning of April.
